You Open My Eyes (Songbook)

Why did Jesus teach what seems unnatural and hard for most of us, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you…” The bible states the reason in part so “that ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven…” (Matt. 5:44-45) Was this a rule of qualifying behavior or a path toward individual perfection, of becoming like him? He said, “Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgement ye judge, ye shall be judged: and with what measure ye mete, it shall be measured to you again.” (Matt. 7:1-2) Was this another good rule of compassionate behavior, or also a path toward a new way of thinking, of becoming.

It has been my experience, and I hope many more such experiences come, that when in difficult situations I trust the Saviors example striving to emulate his love and teachings, that my eyes are open to higher views and thoughts, my ears (my spiritual senses) feel new and better ways of approaching the situation, and my heart changes to be more like him. Writing this song is helping me to remember and make greater effort to trust and be like him, to let go of my eye-for-eye and tooth-for-tooth tendencies. I’m excited to share it with you.
