Over the years I’ve discovered that songs, family memories, career challenges, meaningful service, and ordinary moments all have something in common. Each became a teacher, helping me recognize that God works patiently, honors agency, and continues to guide His children—often in ways we don’t immediately understand.
Once a wise man dreamed he was walking through a dark and dreary wilderness. Another man dressed in white appeared before him and invited him to follow. They traveled for many hours through darkness. After the wise man prayed for mercy he opened his eyes and before him stretched a large and spacious field wherein stood a tree that drew his eyes unlike any he had ever seen. He sensed that the desirable fruit would make him happy. He approached and partook. His eyes squeezed with delight, his head tilted back, he let out a soft sigh as a wide, relaxed smile spread across his face. The sensation filled his soul with great joy. He looked around for those he loved; anxious for them to come and partake.
I see life much like this man’s dream. While living, even doing good, we sometimes find ourselves wading through lengthy darkness before seeing life in new light, even better than the good we sought. Amidst uncertainty and unanswered questions, as we pray our vision expands. We begin to see as hope dispels our darkness. We muster more faith and discover that God’s love is sweeter and more joyful than we had imagined.
- I too have experienced times of darkness.
- I too have been invited toward the light.
- I too have tasted the genuine love of God.
- I too desire others to partake and feel.
That simple desire has shaped much of my life.
The stories gathered in this Legacy Project are not the record of someone who has always understood God’s purposes. More often, they are reflections of someone who only recognized the Lord’s hand after time had passed and the path behind became easier to see than the road ahead. If any of these stories help you notice His hand more clearly in your life, then they will fulfill their purpose.
I’m a husband, father of eight, grandfather, engineer, teacher, songwriter, and disciple of Jesus Christ. Throughout my life I’ve tried to preserve the stories that have shaped faith and family. Those stories eventually became this Legacy Project.
Walk with me a while, and we’ll look back to see where the Lord has been quietly at work in my life, and in yours.
